June 2019 update

At the end of May we had a very successful community archaeological dig, not on the castle hill but in the gardens of Dundonald. Despite slightly temperamental weather we completed a series of 1m by 1m test pits at the primary school and in several gardens across the village. The Young Archaeology Club helped out on Sunday and had a great time.

Our movie night was such a success that we’re holding another screening of Outlaw King in August for those who weren’t able to get tickets. We don’t think there’s anything more atmospheric than watching the life story of Robert the Bruce in his grandson’s favourite castle.

We’ve had a month full of school visits now that the Easter holidays are past, and you may have seen bus loads of excited children all dressed up and heading to see the castle with our education team in full costume.

Also popular was our willow weaving classes on Sunday afternoons led by Michelle of Winslow School of Art; we had a big crowd the last weekend in making willow balls and willow fish. Michelle has now opened her own studio in Stewarton, and will be running courses there from now on, we wish her well with her business! Our art class was also a great success and there will be another landscape painting class this month.

We have two big events this month, our VIP Walking Tour on the 15th June and our Murder Mystery evening on the 22nd of June. Our volunteer guide Dave will be leading a special tour of the castle, Auchans House and the woods in between with lunch into the bargain. Tickets are still available for this and for the ‘Can You Catch a Killer?’ team who are bringing us a special story – The Lost Soul of the Lingering Laird. Join a specialised team of ‘Ghost Hunters’ under cover at possibly the most haunted castle in the whole of Scotland as we figure out who killed the laird.

We also are delighted to announce that at the end of May we maintained our four star (excellent customer experience) Visit Scotland Award, and were awarded our 5th consecutive ‘Certificate of Excellence’. This means that we are now members of the Trip Advisor ‘Certificate of Excellence Hall of Fame’. Thank you to all visitors for taking the time to review their experiences at Dundonald Castle. Both these awards are a testament to the hard work and commitment of our fabulous team of staff and volunteers!
